Salmon Fishing out of Northpoint

7/6/96 through 7/7/96

This was a big weekend for me. I went out fishing on Saturday and Sunday. On top of the fact that this had only been the third and fourth times out this year. Sounds crazy, especially since my boat sits in a slip right on Lake Michigan. Seems like a waste, but I promise to get out on it more since my class is over.

Anyway, the fishing was great, at least in my book. On Saturday, we went out for only two hours and caught 3 fish out of 5 strikes. The two hits we missed were big too. My brother is still kicking himself in the pants for loosing that one.

On Sunday, we fished from about 8 AM to 1 PM. We landed 5 fish out of 10 solid hits. A couple of the ones we lost were big also. The fish that ended up in the cooler were about 2-3 pounds each. All Coho except 1, which was a Laker. We were out at 300 feet which is where most of the charter boats were too. Supposedly the Charters were catching them on the surface. We didn’t take a single one on a yellow bird though. Ours came on downriggers (30 to 50 feet down) and dipseys, set way out, probably at the same depth as the downriggers. The were all caught on green Spin Glows using orange dodgers. We did get one of our hits on a bird with a spoon, which was really the only exception.

What’s funny is that the day before, on Saturday, we were lazy, and didn’t go way out. We stopped in 150 feet of water and caught those fish virtually immediately. It was crazy, we had just gotten our lines out, and I was peeling some line out of a too full reel in the middle of the back deck, when we had two poles trip together. Realize that it was just me, my brother and my 8 year old daughter on the boat. The net was collapsed and still below deck. Me and my brother fought the two fish while my very talented daughter grabbed the net and the wheel of the boat. We managed to get both on board, with that net still collapsed and all that line all over the deck. I had my work cut out for me, untangling that line and everything you know.
