April 5 1997 - Adventure on the Root River

Jim went out and fished the Root River in Racine Wisconsin to see how the action was. He couldn't wait for the boat to get into the water. The boat was getting new canvases and wouldn't make in for another week.

Anyway, the steelhead were in the 1-3 foot deep Root River for their annual spring spawning run. The fish were thick and so were the fishermen. The fish were hitting small flies barely weighted down, just enough weight to sink them. The productive colors seem to have been orange, purple and black. Other baits used were small single egg yarn balls. It's real hard to cut the balls off the yarn but it works! Spawn sacks were used too.

All sorts of rods were used. Fly rods were most prevalent, spinning rods came in second. Everyone seemed to have real long rods. Seven to nine footers!

You had to just toss your lure out into the current and let it drift. Some of the fish caught were snagged, but they were all released. Most were caught completely legally in the mouth. The fish were still actively eating. It seems to be an all day bite, they are not just biting in the morning. If you want a good spot though, you have to get there early.

If you head out, good luck, the run probably won't last much longer. Otherwise, have fun fishing and send some of your stories to salmonoid.com.
